The Rareform Rundown #44
Hey Friends,
Nathan here, I hope you are all doing well and safe out there. This week I’m keeping things brief as there are a lot of heavy things happening with the fires going on in LA. So many people have been effected and are facing really challenging times. If you are one of those people, hang in there.
Quick weekly recap below.

PROJECTS
A little late on the news, but we recently got confirmation that some of our sound design cues made it into the campaign for Moana 2!

Right before the LA fires, we took a deeper deep-dive into AI-generated music. Benn Jordan built an algorithm that can tell whether a track was made by a human or whipped up by artificial intelligence, with spot-on accuracy. The whole thing kicks off from a growing issue: AI tracks being uploaded to streaming platforms and falsely claiming to be made by actual artists, all in an attempt to rake in royalties.
Jordan tested his algorithm on 560 AI-generated songs from platforms like Suno, which specialize in generative AI music tools. The results? His system nailed it, correctly identifying every AI-made track. Interestingly, out of those 560 songs, only 11 weren’t trying to pass themselves off as human-made on platforms like Spotify.

In my personal blog, I break down something I’ve picked up on over the years, how creating or picking the right music for a trailer isn’t just about technique, it’s about feeling things out. Trailers have such a unique job: they need to grab attention, hit the right emotions, and stick in your mind, all in under a few minutes. And music? It’s one of the biggest factors in making that work. It has to fit the visuals and still stand on its own, which takes more instinct than formula.
I used to think there was a blueprint for great trailer music, but I’ve learned it’s more fluid than that. Everything changes depending on the project, whether it’s a high-energy blockbuster or something quieter and emotional—and the client’s direction plays a huge part too. That said, I’ve noticed three things that tend to matter in almost every case: a solid build, some variation, and a sense of closure.
If that sounds interesting, check it out here:

Stay safe out there friends, I appreciate you.

We’ve just revamped and updated our Spotify playlist—tune in to hear what we’ve been bumping lately! It’s funny how the creative path evolves: you give something a name, and later it might conflict with other projects as you grow. So, here we are, updating our playlist name to make room for some exciting new things on the horizon.
