Hans Zimmer, Joker 2 & The Future of Music

The Rareform Rundown #50

Hello Friends,

This week, we’re diving into new projects, creative insights from the legendary Hans Zimmer, the search for authentic African music, and a major step forward in mental health support for the music industry. Plus, for visual creators, we’re breaking down the pros and cons of custom vs. stock music. Let’s get into it!

PROJECTS

We know we're a little late on this, but my team and I are stoked to get confirmation that our sound design made it into the Joker: Folie à Deux campaign! Big thanks to our friends at Warner Bros. for making it happen.

My team and I are still currently on the look for authentic African music. Think chanting and tribal drums.

If you or anyone you know makes music in this vein, feel free and drop a reply to this newsletter with a link!

This week I wanted to share a clip of Hans Zimmer that I really enjoyed. Him breaking down the creative and idea process and not being afraid to challenge the norm.

After Chappell Roan’s speech at the Grammys calling out the lack of healthcare support in the music industry, it’s cool to see some real action being taken. Universal Music Group just announced a mental health fund for industry workers, teaming up with the Music Health Alliance to make it happen. The goal is to make mental health care more accessible and provide long-term support—stuff that’s usually an afterthought in this business. It’s not a perfect fix, but it’s a step in the right direction. Conversations like Roan’s are pushing things forward, and hopefully, this is just the start.

For visual creators, choosing between custom and stock music comes down to what your project needs. Custom music gives you something unique and intentional, great for high-impact projects where every detail matters. Stock music, on the other hand, is quick, affordable, and works when time and budget are tight. Both have their place, but the key is knowing when to use what. If the music is driving the story, custom is worth it. If you just need something that fits, stock can do the job. Either way, make sure your licensing is in order because legal issues over music rights are never worth the headache.

That’s it for this week friends!
