Music Streaming Economics, Game Trailers & Composer Tools

The Rareform Rundown #63

Hello Friends,

Nathan here. We’ve been deep in it over here and got a few things on our radar this week to share with you. From the changing economics of music streaming to the cinematic rise of game trailers and some tools we recommend for new composers.

Let’s dive in 🐬🐬🐬

New projects + music we are looking for

PROJECTS

Really cool hearing our custom take on Going Westward by Dmitry Ivashchenko from The Great Frontier show up again in another spot for Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld. Big thanks to Disney and Ignition Creative for having us on this one!

We got to contribute some sound design to the campaign for Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning!

Music streaming’s going through some changes in 2025. Platforms are rolling out new pricing models and payout systems that are supposed to improve how money moves around and help artists earn more. That’s the idea anyway.

The big shifts? Two-tier licensing and new premium subscription tiers. Both were meant to clean up how music gets used and paid for, but now we’re starting to see ripple effects that no one really planned for. The long-term effects are still unfolding, but it’s clear the industry’s moving into a new phase, one shaped just as much by access and structure as the music itself.

The gaming world’s grown into something way bigger than just one kind of player. These days, if you like a solid story, chances are there’s a game out there for you. And the trailers started feeling more like short films than previews. A big part of that is sound. Music sets the tone, builds the mood, and gives you that hit of emotion before you’ve even picked up a controller.

We’ve had the chance to be part of some cool game campaigns lately and if you're into that kind of thing, read more my blog and check out a few of the projects we were involved in!

For those of you new to the scoring and music production game. My team and shared some insight on the two main tools you need to get rolling and pulled together a bunch of free Kontakt libraries!

That’s it for this week! I appreciate y’all!
