Psycho Killer + The Rise of Hybrid Scores in Modern Film

The Rareform Rundown #84

Hello Friends,

Nathan here, hope the week treated you well. I’ve got a couple of projects to share, a news about YouTube hitting its biggest music payout yet, and a quick thought on how hybrid scores are shaping the sound of modern film.

Let’s dive in!

New projects + music we are looking for

PROJECTS

Hyped to hear Black Hole, a track I worked on with Darby Phillips, featured in the official trailer for Psycho Killer! Huge thanks to Disney for having us be part of this one.

Excited to have our sound design featured in the campaign for The Super Mario Galaxy! Thanks to Universal for having us on board.

YouTube just announced its biggest music payout yet, marking a huge moment in how artists earn from their work online. It’s crazy to think how far the platform has come—from a place to post random videos to one of the biggest drivers of the global music economy.

A lot of that growth comes from YouTube’s mix of ad-supported viewing and paid subscriptions through YouTube Music and Premium. It’s a system that lets both casual listeners and loyal fans support the same ecosystem, helping money flow back to artists and rights-holders.

These days, music on YouTube shows up in so many ways like official videos, lyric videos, Shorts, livestreams, even fan edits. All of it plays a part in how artists connect with audiences and earn from their work. For creators, it’s a reminder that music isn’t just something people listen to anymore, it’s something they watch too.

Sound in film has come a long way. It’s a huge part of how we feel and connect with stories. One big reason for that is the rise of hybrid scores. They mix live orchestras with electronic textures and processed sounds, creating something that feels both cinematic and modern. It’s become the sound of today’s movies.

What makes hybrid scores so interesting is how they can shift mood and energy so easily. You might hear strings layered under a wall of synths, or brass cutting through heavy, processed drums. It gives composers a ton of freedom to move between quiet emotion and big, high-impact moments without losing the flow.

That’s it for this week, I appreciate you!
