The Rareform Rundown #39

Hello Friends,
Nathan here with this week’s update. As always I’m excited to have you along for the ride.
To kick things off, one of my favorite composers, Colin Stetson, just released a new album called The Love It Took to Leave You and it’s recorded live with no overdubs and paired with real-time visuals, definitely worth checking out if you’re into unique and raw performances. On another note, I’m excited to share that we had a hand in some of this year’s Clio-winning projects! There’s also a fascinating study I came across about how composers’ brains are wired differently from non-musicians. And since Thanksgiving just passed, we’ll also share about how the holiday has inspired some really iconic American songs over the years, from old hymns to modern hits.
Let’s get ittt.

New projects + music we are looking for
PROJECTS
My track Square One was featured in the campaign for Trap! Funny enough after hunting for the last few weeks I still can’t find the exact spot with my music in it. Sometimes that’s how it goes haha. Nonetheless, big thanks to our friends at Warner Bros!
SYNC SEARCH
My team and I are currently looking for some African style music. Cool, energetic, rhythmic, organic drums, potentially with chanting. Even better if it falls into the structure of a trailer style track.
If you or anyone you know makes music in this vein, feel free and drop a reply to this newsletter with a link!

Discussions inspired by community questions
This week I chat about what key components really take something from good to great. Whether it’s great food or great music, what is it that takes things to the next level? Let’s explore:

Colin Stetson just released a new album called The Love It Took to Leave You. What makes it stand out is that it was recorded with no overdubs or edits which gives it this raw, immediate feel. On top of that, it’s paired with real-time visuals, creating a full experience that’s more than just the music. If you’re into experimental sounds or performances that feel unfiltered, it’s definitely worth checking out.

My team and I are hyped to have been part of some of this year’s Clio-winning projects! Through our trailer music publishing arm, Black Sheep Music, we’re especially proud to have contributed to two standout campaigns: the TV spot for Monkey Man and the main trailers for Deadpool & Wolverine. Huge thanks to all of our amazing clients for bringing us on!

In this blog, a fascinating study has revealed that music composers’ brains work differently than non-musicians. They have more efficient neural communication and stronger cognitive connections. It’s a cool look at how musical training can actually shape the brain and change the way it functions!

As Thanksgiving just passed, I thought it would be fun to think about how the holiday has inspired so much music over the years. From old hymns like We Gather Together to more modern songs, it had a surprising influence on some iconic American tracks.
